Comares
One of the highest “pueblo blancos” in Andalucía, it has been described as snowdrifts lying on the mountaintop rising high above the surrounding countryside. The death-defying hairpin bends turned out to be no more hair raising than the road at home, though the scenery unfolding, the higher it climbed, was utterly beautiful. A fortress again, built by the Moors, and still retaining that character, though a Parish church has sneaked in, but no postcards on sale and nothing beyond vegetables and acrylic jumpers for sale in the market.
The whole town is cut off from traffic, thus coaches cannot enter, and only ceramic footprints lain in the pavement stones guides you through the village, past its most wonderful view points, ancient portals and cemetery with the constant gentle wind blowing with the fragrance of almond blossom from below.
Beware of the expensive but dirty coffee cups, filthy toilets and grubby fingers of the bar owner. It really was the pits, but as nothing else is available, lost tourists are beguiled to try this anyway. Don’t. Even if your feet ache!
But beauty it had, marvelous vistas you will not forget.
